The small clips in a brake-pad box may be abutment clips, anti-rattle hardware, wear indicators or retaining pieces. They are not interchangeable decorations. Identify each piece from the instructions for the exact pad and caliper before assembly.
A photo of a different vehicle can be misleading. Similar-looking metal pieces may locate a pad, control movement or deliberately contact the rotor only when the lining wears.
Abutment clips provide a pad support interface
Abutment clips commonly fit into the caliper carrier where the pad ears sit. Their shape corresponds to the carrier and pad. Correct seating matters because a distorted or incorrectly stacked clip can interfere with pad movement.
Do not install a new clip over an old one. If the new pad will not fit normally, investigate the part number, hardware orientation and underlying corrosion rather than grinding the pad until it fits.
Anti-rattle springs control unwanted movement

A spring may preload a pad or caliper assembly to reduce unwanted movement. It can look different from a flat carrier clip and may attach to the outer caliper or engage holes or recesses. The correct direction is application-specific.
Wagner includes hardware condition in its brake-noise diagnostic guidance. A noise problem cannot be solved reliably by leaving an unfamiliar spring out of the assembly.
A wear indicator has a different job
A mechanical wear indicator is intended to provide a warning as the friction material becomes thin. It is not simply another anti-rattle clip. Its position can depend on pad location and the vehicle’s design.
Do not infer inner versus outer placement from a generic rule. Identify it using the pad documentation and vehicle service information. An incorrectly placed indicator may provide the wrong warning or create immediate contact.
Retaining pins and clips belong to specific systems
Some calipers retain pads with pins and locking clips rather than the carrier arrangement familiar from a floating caliper. Their locking function is part of keeping the assembly together. A missing locking piece is a stop-work issue.
The Brembo fitting instructions illustrate how hardware is tied to the actual assembly. Use the instructions matching your kit; a general diagram does not authorize substituting another clip shape.
Why a box may contain several different pieces

The kit may distinguish left and right, inner and outer, or different positions within one axle. Compare the supplied part list with the installation sheet. Do not assume that pieces left on the bench are optional extras.
If there is a mismatch, check the exact part number and brake package with the supplier. Previously installed hardware can help orientation, but an earlier incorrect repair is not an authoritative reference.
What to do before the vehicle moves
Confirm every required clip is seated, no unintended part touches the rotor, and the pads can move as designed. Follow the complete service procedure, including fasteners and pedal restoration where applicable. Do not judge the assembly solely by whether the wheel can be bolted on.
For the next stage, see fitting brake-pad retaining hardware. If the clip’s function or location remains unclear, resolve it before driving.
